To help inspire the conversation on digital publishing innovation, this year judges will be posting comments to give feedback to the industry on how we can get better. We have brought together some of the best industry minds in advertising, art direction, broadcast, digital, newspapers, magazines and web design to be on the judging panels this year. We are honoured to have these people as judges this year for COPA 2013. We thank them for their time and support.
Alanna Glicksman is the digital marketing and community manager for MasterCard Canada. She is responsible for social strategy and implementation, with a key focus on managing Canada's social communities. Alanna oversees MasterCard Canada's social media properties, including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram and Pinterest, and helps drive various digital marketing and communications programs. Previously, Alanna was a consultant at Hill+Knowlton Strategies, an international public relations agency. She holds a BA (honours) from Western Ontario and a post-graduate certificate in public relations from Humber College.
Avenue magazine’s original art director, Anders has stewarded the hugely successful brand through two of the publishing industry’s most tumultuous decades. Along the way, he became creative director for RedPoint Media & Marketing Solutions (publisher of Avenue), earning local and national awards both for his design work on Avenue and his brand development for other magazines and creative clients. He’s an expert on visual storytelling, with an in-the-trenches perspective on the limitless creative possibilities of print media.
Andrew Yates is the Senior Producer of Community and Social Media and CBC News. For almost 15 years he has worked at the intersection of digital and broadcast news. Prior to CBC News, Andrew has produced, written, curated and moderated news for National Post, Discovery Channel, CTV and City TV
Ashleigh is an independent digital strategist with more than 10 years of online editorial experience. After a short stint as a newspaper reporter she began working in women’s lifestyle media, focusing on content and product development, brand building, and hitting business targets.
Bill Mickey is the editorial director of Folio: magazine at Red 7 Media, a division of Access Intelligence. Bill joined Red 7 Media in 2004 and has held a variety of positions within its Publishing Group, including managing editor of Folio:, executive editor of Audience Development, and executive editor of Expo magazine.

Charlene Rooke is the Group Editor of Globe Edge, the custom-media department within The Globe and Mail. She has been an editor of print and digital consumer (Western Living, Avenue Calgary) and custom (Air Canada's enRoute, LCBO's Food & Drink, Fairmont magazine, Mercedes-Benz Magazine) publications for 20 years and is the author of two travel guidebooks.

Chris Skinner is an online media executive with more than 15 years digital experience in content development, product development, production, design and strategic direction. He is currently the head of digital for CTV at Bell Media. Dan Levy is the editor of Sparksheet, Spafax’s multiplatform media and marketing magazine. He holds a master's degree in journalism from Boston University and worked as a research assistant at the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard, where he studied and scribbled about online media. Duncan Clark is charged with developing projects across all Postmedia platforms and is primarily tasked with leading the company's startup-inspired skunkworks office, Postmedia Labs. The team at Labs is working developing new, sustainable, social- and community-focused experiences to go alongside Gastropost, a thriving product for food lovers that launched last year.
Emma Woolley is a Toronto writer, advocate and community manager. After studying English and book and magazine publishing, she joined Cottage Life Media as a web editor and later, digital content manager. Emma now works at design/development agency The Phuse

Erica Kirkland is the Editor of Retail News, Canada's leading business-to-business magazine for retailers and resellers of gifts, home decor, housewares, stationery, handmade goods, personal care, jewellery, seasonal decorations, home textiles, wall art, decorative accessories, and much more.
Florence Butihen has been in the advertising industry for over 10 years with an early start working within the research sector. Her early years were focused within planning traditional media across major CPG clients including Procter & Gamble, Unilever, and L’Oreal Paris. She is currently at ZenithOptimedia as an Integrated Account Manager overseeing both Kia Canada and Hasbro Canada’s digital campaigns.
Gail J. Cohen
One of Canada’s most experienced and respected legal journalists, Editor in Chief Gail J. Cohen oversees content for Canadian Lawyer, InHouse, 4Students and Law Times, the Legal Feeds blog, and their associated web sites and digital initiatives. A journalist for 20 years — 17 devoted solely to the legal profession — she started her career in daily news and now oversees a team at Thomson Reuters Canada.
Gary Graves has been an Executive Producer at CBC News Online since 2011. Previously, he was producer in charge of online news features and in-depth articles, and also responsible for local CBC News websites across Canada. He's been working in online news since 2000, after moving from network television news.
Gavin Adamson is am assistant prof at Ryerson University, where he has worked as an instructor since 2008. In the industry, Gavin worked for Bloomberg News and Transcontinental Medias, where he conceived of and launched their online video platform, IETV. Gavin was also nominated for a Gemini Award for a broadcast documentary he co-produced as a freelancer for several years.
With almost 30 years in client side marketing and advertising, Gord’s expertise shifted early as consumers began embracing all things digital. He led the ‘Client First’ advertising evolution at RBC before turning his attention to online lead generation, content development and most recently, the corporate use of social media to drive business results. As the Web Architect at Venture Publishing for the past six years, he's had the opportunity to develop a range of online properties with a resourceful and dynamic team of content creators.
Haig Tossounian, Vice President of Access Strategic Design & Communications Inc., has over 30 years of expertise in strategic branding and marketing for the B2B marketplace. Focused on global business development and sales in Technology, Telecom and Professional Services, Haig promotes branding and marketing initiatives consistent with corporate business goals and objectives. Holly Pateman is the Vice President of Marketing for Canada Wide Media Ltd. where she oversees the strategic and creative development for all corporate and brand-based marketing initiatives. Having spent the past 15 years working across multiple marketing landscapes, including agency, retail, start-up and publishing, her passions and affinities are rooted in marketing innovation and digital media.
Ian has spent all of his professional career in the Marketing Communications field: first at advertising agencies and most recently as the General Manager, Corporate Brand Management at Panasonic Canada. His newest venture is called Get SET, a MarCom consultancy specializing in Sports, Entertainment and Technology sponsorships.
Irene Fu is a digital professional with almost 20 years of experience since the earliest days of the Web, when PINE was the email client of choice. Currently, Irene is the Web Architect for the Toronto District School Board, leading and supporting digital projects and social media strategy. In her previous position, Irene was Web Development Manager for Business Information Group, the largest trade publisher in Canada. She was key in developing and executing digital strategies encompassing all business areas and social media, and oversaw dozens of digital properties and initiatives.
Jacqueline Kovacs has been an editor and a writer for more than two decades — and a blogger and Tweeter for far fewer years. Currently editor-in-chief of Professionally Speaking, she is also a regular presenter for Magazines Canada and creator of an online course for Cultural Human Resources Council showing editors how to adapt embrace digitization.
Jason Miller is a St. John's-based Art Director with Atlantic Business Magazine. He has over 15 years' experience in the graphic arts industry. Previously, he was an instructor at the College of North Atlantic, teaching night courses in Quark and Adobe. He won best Table of Contents at the 2009 Tabbie International Business Press Awards, and won Best Cover at the 2012 Atlantic Journalism Awards.
Jean Snow is Executive Director of the Pecha Kucha organization. A longtime resident of Tokyo, he lives and breathes design, pop culture and gaming, sustained by an unhealthy addiction to magazines and frequent visits to his favorites cafes. He has reported on these obsessions for various online/offline publications, and runs The Magazine, a website about magazine culture.
JP Fozo's experience includes working on the digital strategy for MoneySense, Maclean's and Canadian Business magazines when he was the GM, Digital, Current Affairs & Business, Consumer Publishing Group. He gets excited about everything from innovative storytelling, design, user experience, business analysis, project management, product management, technology, sales processes, analytics, web, apps, social and mobile to overall brand strategy. Julia is the Director of digital marketing for the Ontario Tourism Marketing Partnership Corporation and provides strategic direction, planning and execution for a full range of integrated marketing programs. She leads a team of mobile, social, digital marketing and project management professionals to market Ontario as a preferred travel destination to attract Canadian and international tourists. Julia’s previous experience includes strategic marketing roles for BMO E-Business Division and Aon Reed Stenhouse, one of North America’s largest insurance brokerages.
Kathy Vey is a veteran Toronto journalist. She has been executive editor of QPBriefing.com
and was founding editor in chief of OpenFile, Canada’s first collaborative local news website. Previously she worked at the Toronto Star, Ottawa Citizen and the Toronto Sun, and wrote for Canadian Gardening magazine.

Previously, Kenneth was the VP Digital for Post Media Network and St Joseph Media, where he managed leading digital publications including montrealgazette.com, torontolife.com, where.ca, fashionmagazine.com, weddingbells.ca, and recipes.ca, an online cooking community which he co-founded.
Kerry Powell is a journalist and digital media strategist in Edmonton with 20 years experience in news production, marketing and digital products. While at the Edmonton Journal, she was a social media and digital evangelist who coached the newsroom team to numerous honours from COPA, Editor & Publisher and the Online News Association.

Kim Peacock and has over 20 years’ experience on the publishing, client and now the agency side as the GM of Edleman Canada West. Prior to joining Edelman, Kim was Director, Global Marketing, for HootSuite. Kim has spent 13 years at the executive level in publishing, as Group Publisher for TC Media’s Western Media Group, where she rebranded its flagship titles, Vancouver magazine and Western Living for the digital world. Prior to that, she was Associate Publisher at Toronto Life and Saturday Night magazines in Toronto.
Leah Sandals is Online Editor at Canadian Art, Canada's most widely read art magazine. Prior to holding that post, she was a freelance arts journalist contributing to the National Post, Toronto Star and Globe and Mail. In 2012, Canadian Art won two COPA golds: best online-only article or series of articles and best e-newsletter.
Leo Charbonneau has been an editor for more than 25 years, specializing in the areas of science, medicine and higher education. Most of those years were spent with Rogers Communications’ publishing division before he joined University Affairs magazine in 2000 as Deputy Editor. He started his Margin Notes blog in 2008. The blog has twice won the gold medal for best blog – in the trade and education publishing division – at the Canadian Online Publishing Awards, in 2009 and again in 2012.
Lucie Dumas is the VP Content and Group Publisher of TVA Publications overseeing more than 40 magazines in the Quebecor Media group. Her portfolio includes some of the leading brands in Quebec Clin d'oeil, 7Jours, and CHEZSOI. She has over 20 years on the agency side as the head of major accounts such as L'Oréal Paris, MasterCard Canada, RBC, Fidelity Investments and Maybelline New York, she joined the magazine industry in 2010.
Lynn McAuley is an Associate Editor at the Toronto Star where she is responsible for foreign coverage and enterprise projects. Before this, she ran digital news coverage on thestar.com for two years, winning a COPA for best newspaper site and leading online coverage of the G20 which was part of the Star’s National Newspaper Award for breaking news. Lynn spent 22 years at the Ottawa Citizen, where she was the managing editor for four years.
Marcos Terenzio is a strategic Creative Director, designer and digital visionary with over 20 years’ experience in advertising. He leads his own boutique agency Spot Digital and created and launched Alchemy the digital agency for St. Joseph Communications (one of the largest privately held communications companies in Canada). He specializes in integrated omni-channel approaches centred around digital mediums to effectively engage, communicate, captivate and deliver results on business objectives.
Matthew Blackett is the publisher, creative director and one of the founders of Spacing magazine. Blackett was named Editor of the Year for 2007 by the Canadian Society of Magazine Editors and Spacing was named Canadian Small Magazine of the Year from 2007 to 2009. Blackett is the co-recipient of the 2010 Jane Jacobs Prize for "contributing to the fabric of Toronto life in a unique way... that has become a part of our shared urban experience."

Nicola Clayton is founder of Manhattan-based Luxury Media Sales - a global ad rep and media buying firm. Formerly, as Vice President at Maclean’s, Clayton created the first Marketing Solutions department in Canada; marketed the launch of Yahoo.ca
and pioneered many new lines of revenue for the magazine. Rogers transferred Nicola to Manhattan in 2000 to establish their first multi-platform consumer ad sales office. An avid runner, she recently crossed the finish line at the Tokyo marathon and is in training for Chicago.
Niel Hiscox is President of Universus Media Group Inc., a business-to-business and custom publisher based in Markham, Ontario. Previously, he was the VP of CLB Media Inc and president of the Automotive/Aviation division of Annex Publishing & Printing Inc. Neil is a dedicated industry volunteer as a board member of Magazine Canada (current) and the Canadian Business Press.
Norm is Creative Director and founder of K9 Design Co. Patricia Gray, Managing Director, Digital Solutions Media Experts was among the first media professionals to specialize in Digital Media in Canada playing a seminal role in launching the Digital Solutions Department at Media Experts in 2001. Throughout his career, Sheldon has led digital strategy and production for many of Canada's top broadcasting and publishing brands including 680News, CHFI and Maclean's Magazine. He joined the National Post in 2009 and currently leads the digital product team who were recognized in 2012 by the Canadian Online Publishing Awards with a Gold medal for Best Overall Companion website in Canada.
Sonny is president and creative director of Hamazaki Wong Marketing Group, an award-winning marketing-communications agency based in Vancouver. with expertise in multicultural marketing. Sonny co-founded and is producer of the annual Leo Awards, BC’s awards program for the film and television industry. Sonny was general manager of the annual Canadian International Dragon Boat Festival, the largest and most celebrated dragon boat event in North America.
In her role as publisher of Chatelaine, Canada's largest magazine, Tara has overseen the brand's extension into new platforms including radio, TV, mobile, tablet and licensing. Tara Has more than 20 years of global sales and marketing experience. Launching her career at Estée Lauder in New York, refining her business prowess at Liz Claiborne, leading a team at Kellwood Company and discovering her true passion for media at Conde Nast. Tara enjoys developing brand strategies and engaging consumers on multiple levels at multiple touch points.
Val Maloney is the associate editor of Media in Canada and a contributor to sister publications Strategy and Playback. She has over five years experience in the Canadian digital and print magazine world, notably working as editor of Masthead Online.
Valerie White is a seasoned b-to-b editor who began her career with Marketing Magazine at Maclean Hunter (now Rogers Publishing). While not a doctor, Valerie played one in print for several years in her senior role at the Medical Post. In 2009 she made the jump to online, where she helped launch CanadianHealthcareNetwork.ca
, a multi-disciplinary website for health professionals. Since then, Valerie has been hands-on in the daily management of the site, which she affectionately calls her “cranky baby.”
Originally from Australia, Vanessa Wyse is the Creative Director of The Grid in Toronto. In only 2 years, the hybrid publication was named one of the Worlds Best Designed Newspapers by SND in both 2012 and 2013. The Grid has also been recognized with numerous other awards from SPD, SND and Canadian National Magazine Awards. Previous to The Grid, Vanessa has designed for numerous magazines including Report on Business magazine and Cosmopolitan Australia.
Zahra is the director of digital marketing for Reader's Digest Canada for all their brands that include Reader's Digest, Best Health and Our Canada. She is a marketing pro with 20+ years experience in consumer marketing with the last 9 years in digital marketing/strategy and business development. She holds a Bachelor of Commerce from McGill University in Montreal.
