The year’s esteem panel judge for the COPAs are some of the best industry minds in advertising, art direction, broadcast, digital, newspapers, magazines and web design. We are honoured to have these people as judges this year from across Canada. We thank them for their time and support.

With over 20 years under her belt in marketing and digital business, Sandra has held several positions in the media industry including Director of Licensing at TC Media and Publisher of ELLE Quebec. She has extensive experience on both agency and client side, working with brands such as Lancôme, IKEA, Yves Saint Laurent, Suzuki, Dior, Reader’s Digest and GM Motors. She is now Managing Director of Happyfication, a New York based data intelligence company. Sandra holds an MBA from McGill, a Degree in Communications and French Literature from York University. She also holds certificates in Digital Disruption from INSEAD and Prosci Change Management.

Melissa considers herself a brand growth strategist committed to building systems and strategies that have positive impact. Currently, she is the Director of Marketing of NBC Universal's only North American SVOD (Streaming video on demand). Some of you might know from Roger’s as a group publisher  for their Fashion & Beauty brands. She also had stint working for Toronto Fashion Week by driving all revenue and marketing partnerships for the fall '17 and spring '18 events.

Manuel Angelini is the Chief Product Owner for the French language entertainment and lifestyle brands at Bell Media. He leads the​ digital product delivery teams to ensure that new digital initiatives help solidify Bell Media's position in the Quebec Market. Manuel is an expert in video over IP technologies and cross-platform video distribution. Until recently, he was responsible for the mobile product development team at Nuglif, a subsidiary of La Presse.

Fawn Annan is the President, Chief Marketing Officer and Group Publisher of IT World Canada/ IDG Canada. She is also partner and CMO for Amazing! Agency, a content agency. Ms. Annan has operated her own business and held senior positions in marketing and strategy with a variety of firms. In 2012 she received the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Award for her contribution to the IT industry. Ms Annan believes in life-long education, recently having finished her MBA in Media Leadership and Sustainability from Cumbria University in Northern England.

She manages 26 international websites and leads a cross functional team of developers, quality assurance specialists, and editors for Morningstar Research Inc. She previously managed REALTOR.ca, Canada’s most visited real estate website. Additionally, Saffiyya also spends her time coaching and creating content to motivate post secondary students and young professional in their academics pursuits and careers. Saffiyya holds a Bachelor of Commerce in Marketing from the Telfer School of Management. When she's not in the office, Saffiyya can be found switching her sparkly flats to her running shoes and chasing after her next travel adventure.

Shanna Baker is the senior editor at Hakai Magazine, an online publication based in Victoria, British Columbia, that explores science, society, and the environment from a coastal perspective. Her primary focus at the magazine is on editing long-form features and photo-driven stories. In her own writing, she gravitates to stories about lesser-loved wildlife and conservation issues. Recent projects have taken her to Australia, Cuba, India, and British Columbia’s Great Bear Rainforest region. Shanna is also an experienced photojournalist and travel photographer whose work is represented by several leading stock photography agencies.

Michele Beaulieu is the Canadian Media Manager for Subway. Prior to joining Subway's marketing team, Michele was on the executive at media agencies, Mindshare and Starcom, leading client teams and developing strategies to effectively communicate with her clients’ target consumers. She thoroughly understands the fundamentals of all media and their role within the communications plan. In 2015, Michele also taught Marketing for Advertising at Mohawk College in their Business program.

Florence Butihen is the Director of Digital Investments at Hearts & Science, as well, sits on Omnicom Media Group’s Trading team. Her early years were focused within the research sector, with a shift that lasted more than 10 years planning traditional media campaigns across major clients including Procter & Gamble, Unilever, and L'Oreal Paris. Her interests in the world of digital media found herself switching her traditional media focus to a deeper dive within the digital space, a space that she finds very interesting. She has done Stand-Up and Improv and you can find her as an advertisement on the TTC in Toronto reminding everyone of backpack etiquette.

He is currently a Marketing Manager at CPA Canada responsible for developing and managing marketing strategies for the organization’s professional development products. He manages integrated marketing campaigns for conferences and courses, which include digital and print advertising, social media, email marketing, search marketing, content marketing and direct mail. He holds a Honours Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies from Wilfrid Laurier University, a Post-Graduate Certificate in Interactive Multimedia from Algonquin College and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the Schulich School of Business at York University.

Roland-Yves Carignan had a long and successful career in newsrooms and he is now a visiting professor of journalism at the École des medias of Université du Québec à Montréal. He was managing editor at Le Devoir, where he worked for more than 10 years, and previously assistant managing editor for visuals at the Montreal Gazette, the National Post in Toronto, and Libération in Paris. He is currently finalizing a master’s thesis looking into the changing role of journalism through social media.

Julie Carl, Senior Editor, Toronto Star, is an industry veteran and has travelled Canada during her career with stints as City Editor at the London Free Press, Content Editor of the Now Network in Ontario and then off to Nova Scotia to work as the managing editor of Valley Today. Her next stop was in New Brunswick as the editorial page editor of the Daily Gleaner in Fredericton before landing as deputy editor at the Winnipeg Free Press. Along the way she has garnered a slew of awards and is especially proud of being on the winning team of the fourth annual Brant County Literacy Council Spelling Bee, for which she was awarded a very nice bath sponge with a loofah on one side.

Sam also pioneered the brand’s blogger program before founding ROI Relations with Delphine Nicholls. Spearheading projects for clients at International Fashion Weeks and the Olympics are amongst some of her favourite and most successful industry memories.

Over his 30-year career in the publishing industry, Camile has been involved in many aspects of publishing both from the publisher’s side and from the supplier’s side. Camile is now a consultant specialized in subscription Marketing and database Fulfillment. Prior to this Camile, has been Director of Client Services in the fulfillment industries. In this role, he has worked over the years with publishers to help them develop and built their digital offerings. He also worked for publishers like Avid Media, TC Media and Gesca as Circulation Managers. This is the third time he is judging the COPA Awards.

Her industry awards include the 2005 PEI BDC Young Entrepreneur of the Year, the 2006 Greater Charlottetown Chamber of Commerce Emerging Business Award of Excellence, 2010 Growing Business Award from the PEI Business Women’s Association and the 2012 Best Social Media Campaign at the Atlantic Interactive Marketing Conference. Kathryn is the Senior Instructor/Journalist at the University of British Columbia Graduate School of Journalism (UBC). She is a journalist who teaches and trains journalism practice and  spent two decades doing daily radio at CBC Radio in Vancouver.  At UBC, Kathryn leads the Integrated Journalism/Journalism Standards and Practices courses, teaches an Audio Module and contributes to the Reporting in Indigenous Communities course and Global Reporting program.

The completion of work on his master’s degree in Virtual Reality/360-degree journalism (2017) from the University of Alberta in the Communication and Technology program (MACT) kick-started applied research opportunities at Lethbridge College in the fall of 2017. This exciting research applies to the ever-evolving world of journalism and its adjustments to a new medium.

Brenda Jane Johnstone is the owner and publisher of Convenience & Carwash Canada magazine, a national, bi-monthly trade publication targeted to the owners and operators of convenience stores, retail petroleum and carwash sites in Canada.  She recently launched the first-ever, Women in Carwash™ conference, an event that offers women (and men) working within the Carwashing industry across North America to meet, learn and collaborate on industry trends and ideas to enable women in or wishing to enter into the Carwashing industry. Brenda is also an avid golfer and outdoors person who loves nothing better than to jump in her kayak on Lake of the Woods at her cottage for a trip around the bay.

He was the editor-in-chief of several national Sun Media magazines. In 2005 he founded Lush Magazine, a quarterly fashion and luxury lifestyle print magazine, with a national circulation. That publication evolved into Lush Luxury Magazine. Trudy Lancelyn, ABC, has been editing and writing professionally for nearly 40 years, mainly for controlled-circulation periodicals. During the 1980s she was assistant editor, then editor, of a community magazine for five years, then freelanced for three years, followed by two years as managing editor of a weekly business tabloid in Vancouver. In the 1990s she started what turned into a 30-year stretch as communications lead in business associations, managing their in-house publications. She also taught editing and copywriting in Simon Fraser University’s non-credit writing program. Now semi-retired, Trudy writes and edits part-time from a home office.

Karen Meckelborg is a sales and marketing strategist from western Canada with over 25 years of media experience. In her past roles as VP of Sales for Vancouver’s Canada Wide Media, and VP of Sales & Marketing for Calgary’s RedPoint Media & Marketing Solutions, Karen has successfully developed new multi-platform advertising concepts, including special content-based promotions such as native advertising and integrated print, digital, video, and sponsored social media. Karen now operates FIO Consulting Inc., advising businesses on sales, media and marketing strategy. She also runs a unique sales outsourcing service for select clientele across the west and into Toronto. Past contributions include driving revenue for CTV, serving as a member of the Advertising Services Committee for Magazines Canada, and speaking at various Magazines Canada webinars and events, including the Business Media Leadership Summit.

She’s the deputy editor of Lion’s Roar magazine and the editor of three anthologies for Shambhala Publications, including Right Here with You: Bringing Mindful Awareness into Our Relationships. Miller has an MFA in creative writing from the University of British Columbia, and her writing has appeared in publications such as The Globe and Mail, BirdWatching, Saltscapes, Mindful, and Prairie Fire.
